# User Roles

Roles and capabilities control what someone can see or do in a business.

Use this article for the older customer-detail role view. For current staff access, use [Roles & Permissions](/help-center/roles-permissions), [Staff Management](/help-center/staff), and [Access Control](/help-center/access-control).

## Common access types

### Customer

Customers can book, buy products, manage their own account, and view their own activity.

### Staff

Staff members can access the business workspace according to the role or capabilities they were given.

### Teacher or provider

Teachers and providers can have teaching or appointment delivery profiles. That does not automatically mean they can manage the business.

### Manager

Managers can help run operations such as customers, bookings, classes, staff, or payments depending on the configured access.

### Owner

Owners have broad control over business settings and access. Give owner-level access only to people who should be able to make major business changes.

## Where to manage access now

Use:

- **Admin > Settings > Staff** for inviting and managing staff
- **Admin > Settings > Staff** for staff administration
- **Admin > Teachers** for teaching profile setup
- Customer detail role sections only when your role includes access to those links

Access should match the person's job. Do not grant broader access just to solve one temporary task.

## Role changes and profile changes are different

Changing a public teaching profile controls what customers see about a teacher.

Changing staff access controls what the person can do inside Admin.

If someone can teach but cannot open a staff page, update staff access. If someone can open Admin but is missing from classes, check the teaching profile and class assignment.

## Best practices

- Give the minimum access needed.
- Remove access when someone leaves.
- Review staff access regularly.
- Avoid sharing one login between multiple people.
- Use customer detail changes for customer support, not staff administration.

## Troubleshooting

### Someone cannot open a page

Check their staff access and selected business.

### Someone appears as a teacher but cannot manage classes

They may have a teaching profile without class-management access.

### A customer has too much access

Review their business links and remove any role or staff access they no longer need.
