# Teacher Assignments on Class Instances

A class has a default **Instructor**. New sessions inherit that instructor, and you can override the instructor for an individual session or a range of sessions.

## How teacher assignments work

The **Instructor** in class settings is the default for new sessions. Open a class session from the class details page to review its current instructor or change the assignment.

### Scheduled teacher vs actual teacher

The product labels this field **Instructor**. In practice, the class default and the instructor on a session can differ:

- The class default is inherited by new sessions.
- A session can use a different instructor. Class details can show **Class default** when the session has an override.
- You can add **Additional instructors** and choose **Co-instructor**, **Assistant**, or **Guest** for their role.

The visible product label is Instructor even when a session is covered by someone else.

## Changing the teacher on a class

Open the class session details and select **Change** next to **Instructor**. Choose the assignment scope that matches the change you need.

### What happens when you change a teacher

The change flow offers:

- **Substitute for this class** — changes only the current occurrence.
- **Substitute for selected dates** — changes the current occurrence through an end date.
- **Permanent from here on** — applies the new instructor to future occurrences. After saving, review the class default and upcoming sessions to confirm the intended scope.

You can also add additional instructors to the assignment and choose their role.

### When to change a teacher

Choose the scope that matches your situation:

- **One-time coverage**: select **Substitute for this class**.
- **Coverage across a range of dates**: select **Substitute for selected dates** and set the **Through date**.
- **A permanent schedule change**: select **Permanent from here on**, then review the class default and upcoming sessions after saving.

## Substitute teachers

When an instructor temporarily covers a class, use one of the **Substitute** options in the change flow.

### How substitutes differ from reassignments

| Change option | Result |
|----------|----------------|
| **Substitute for this class** | Changes one class session. |
| **Substitute for selected dates** | Changes sessions through the selected end date. |
| **Permanent from here on** | Applies the new instructor to future occurrences. Review the class default and upcoming sessions after saving. |

### Substitute tracking

In class details, a substituted session can show **Sub · Substitute for [instructor]**. You can:

- See the instructor assigned to the session and the instructor being covered.
- Select **Restore [scheduled instructor]** to return the session to its scheduled instructor.

## Impact on payroll

If your pay setup depends on the instructor assigned to a class, confirm how your business records a change before relying on it for pay.

## Bulk teacher changes

To change the teacher for multiple future instances at once:

1. Open the class from **Admin > Classes**.
2. Open the class settings menu and choose **Edit Future Instances**.
3. Select **Teacher**.
4. Choose the **New teacher**.
5. Set the date range and confirm the change.

See [Editing Future Class Instances](/help-center/editing-future-instances) for the complete guide on bulk changes.
